The Medical Research Unit (URM) of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lambarene, Gabon received members of AMMREN Gabon Chapter. The trip was in preparation for the commemoration of World Malaria Day. The URM, the only unit that specializes in Medical Research in Gabon is currently working on the study of a vaccine called RTS, S The study of the vaccine is in it’s 3rd phase. The trials involve children participants whose are taking part in the trials voluntarily.

This research is currently being done in other African countries including Mozambique, Tanzania, Ghana, Burkina - Faso, Kenya and Malawi. The vaccine may help reduce malaria by 60%. The vaccine will be tested on 16,000 candidates.
