25 April 2007 - Ghana; Africa Malaria Day
On 25th April, 2000, African Heads of State and Governments of the 53 countries of Africa met in Abuja, Nigeria to commit themselves to an intensive effort to halve malaria mortality for Africa's people by 2010.
Seven years down the line, not much has been achieved. Majority of African countries are still trying to achieve the 60% target of malaria reduction. Most people suffering from malaria in Africa do not have prompt access to correct, affordable and appropriate treatment within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. 90% of the worlds Malaria deaths of children under 5 years and pregnant women still occur in Africa.
23 -27 April 2007 - Kenya Workshop on reporting on Malaria in Africa Malaria though malaria continue to pose an important public health problem in Africa.There is little effective reporting ongoing on the threat created by the disease. AMMREN has identified the inadequate provision of information to journalists as one of the reasons for the poor reporting on malaria in Africa. The Media Training Workshop on Reporting on Malaria Research in Africa will equiped journalists with the right tools for effective malaria reporting and programming in Africa.
Jan 3, 2007:AMMREN visits Kintampo Health Research Centre, Ghana The objectives of the visit were to acquire first hand information on malaria clinical vaccine trial taking place at the centre, seek the views of the parents of children participating in the trials, interview field workers and researchers working on the malaria clinical trials and produce stories and a documentary on the malaria vaccine trials taking place at the centre. 
AMMREN Formed in Accra; November 2006
African journalists met in Accra in November 2006, to form a network specializing in reporting malaria research. The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) creates a common platform for African journalists and scientists to work together on efforts to eradicate malaria, which is the number one killer of children aged under five on the continent.  |
