FIRST STAKEHOLDERS CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON INESS HELD IN ACCRA
A two – day stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the Indepth Effectiveness and Safety Studies of Anti – Malarials in Africa (INESS) was held on the 18th - 19th of June 200 9 in Accra, Ghana.
The meeting brought together about 50 participants representing various organisations and groups who will be involve in the implementation of the INESS project. Participants included representatives of the Ghana Health Service, Ghana National Malaria Control Programme, Health and Demographic Surveillance Sites in Ghana, pharmacists and local health workers. Other participants were District Chief Executives of areas involved in the INESS project which include Dodowa, Kintampo and Navrongo. Representatives of the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) were also present at the meeting.
Delivering the opening address at the meeting on behalf of the Director – General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Joseph Amankwah, the Director of Public Health (GHS) said that the need for a system that will follow up on actual health projects on the ground in Ghana has been long overdue. The INESS project, he said is timely and a pacesetter in health systems in Africa. He called on participants to work feverishly towards the success of INESS.
AMMREN Mozam bique Coordinator Wins Award
Mr. Arsenio Manhice, Coordinator of the Mozambican chapter of African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) has been elected the second best Mozambican Journalist in HIV/AIDS reporting.
Mr. Manhice won a similar award last year, in a competition that was organized by the Movement of Education for All in partnership with UNESCO.

AMMREN Ghana Marks World Malaria Day
To observe this years Wor ld Malaria Day, the African Media and Malaria Research Network organized a day’s seminar for Journalists and Scientists in Ghana.
The seminar which was on the theme “Counting on the Media to Eradicate Malaria” brought together about 45 participants from the print and electronic media houses.
Giving the opening remarks at the seminar, the Executive secretary of AMRREN, Mrs Charity Binka noted that lots of efforts have gone into eradicating malaria in the world but it continues to be one of the leading causes of death in Africa. She therefore called for increase support and efforts from every sector, especially from the media.
She noted that the media are the gatekeepers of every society, the lead and touch bearers in promoting change and new ideas. “They must therefore not be left out in counting malaria out of the world”.
Some of the resource persons at the seminar were Dr. Kwaku Poku Asante, Clinical Research Fellow, Kintampo Health Research Centre, Dr Alex Dodoo, President of the Pharmaceutical Association of Ghana/AMMREN Patron, Mr. James Frimpong, Programme Officer, National Malaria Control Programme, Dr George.
